What is Individual Health Insurance?

In short

Individual health insurance is taken out by a person for themselves and their family, covering inpatient and outpatient treatment costs arising from illness or accident within policy limits. There are two main options: private health insurance, and complementary health insurance (TSS) that works alongside the Social Security Institution (SGK).

Private health insurance covers inpatient and outpatient treatment costs across a wide network of contracted hospitals, independent of SGK. Complementary health insurance covers the extra fees that SGK-insured people pay at private hospitals contracted with SGK, at a lower premium.

The premium depends on age, gender, health status, the selected hospital network and the scope of cover. Pre-existing conditions are assessed through a health declaration before the policy starts; continuously renewed policies may offer benefits such as a lifetime renewal guarantee. We compare plans from different insurers for you and explain hospital networks and cover in plain language.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between private and complementary health insurance?

Private health insurance is independent of SGK and offers a wider hospital network and cover. Complementary health insurance is only for SGK-insured people; it covers extra fees at private hospitals contracted with SGK and has a lower premium.

Are my pre-existing conditions covered?

In individual policies, pre-existing conditions are assessed through the health declaration; they may be excluded or accepted with an additional premium. Conditions are generally more flexible in corporate (group) policies.

What is a waiting period?

For maternity and some treatments, a certain period must pass after the policy starts. Waiting periods vary by insurer and plan.

Can I move from my company's group health policy to an individual policy?

Yes. Many insurers allow people leaving a group policy to switch to an individual policy under certain conditions while keeping their acquired rights.

Scope of cover and limits are determined by the general and special conditions of the issuing insurer.
